COVID-19
Symptoms
COVID-19, also known as coronavirus, is a respiratory illness caused by the SARS-CoV-2 virus. Symptoms can include:
- Fever or chills
- Cough
- Sore throat
- Shortness of breath
- Runny or stuffy nose
- Headache or body aches
- New loss of taste or smell
Vaccination
New variants of COVID-19 appear each year. To keep up, scientists update the COVID-19 vaccine so it provides the best possible protection against emerging strains.
Most states saw an increase in COVID-19 cases this summer, with national wastewater data rising from “low” to “moderate” in August 2025. Cases often surge again during respiratory virus season (November through April). Getting an updated vaccine provides protection during times of higher spread.
New COVID-19 variants emerge each year. Updated vaccines are designed to protect against the latest strains.
Children
The American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP) recommends COVID-19 vaccination for:
- All children ages 6–23 months
- Children and teens ages 2–18 years who are at high risk for severe COVID-19
Children and teens ages 2–18 years who are not at high risk can still be vaccinated this season for added protection. Parents and caregivers should talk with a healthcare professional about accessing the vaccine.
Pregnant People
The American College of Obstetricians and Gynecologists (ACOG) recommends that pregnant people receive an updated COVID-19 vaccine:
- At any point during pregnancy
- When planning to become pregnant
- During the postpartum period
- While lactating
Adults
For adults not at high risk for severe COVID-19:
- Ages 19–64: The American Academy of Family Physicians (AAFP) recommends one or more doses of the COVID-19 vaccine.
- Ages 65 and older: Two or more doses are recommended.
The best vaccine type and dosage depend on your vaccination history and other factors. Talk to a healthcare professional about which COVID-19 vaccine is right for you this season and where to get it.
Prevention
Other ways to help prevent the spread of COVID-19:
- Wash your hands often
- Cover coughs and sneezes
- Wear a high-quality face mask
- Stay home when you’re sick
