Welcome! What is Environmental Health? It is quality of life determined by physical, chemical, biological, social and psychosocial factors in the environment. The Environmental Health Division works to assess, correct, control and prevent harmful factors in the environment through education, regulation and inspection. Our mission is "To improve, protect and promote the environmental health of Champaign County."

Here's a little of our history: Since the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District (CUPHD) opened its doors in 1937, Environmental Health has been a strong part of the structure of the agency, being the original cornerstone on which the health district was formed. In 1988, CUPHD was one of the first three local health departments to implement a computerized inspection system in the state of Illinois. In 1993, Environmental Health developed a pilot program for categorizing food service facilities and teaching managers of those facilities about safety and sanitation. The Illinois Department of Public Health adopted CUPHD's approach statewide. In 1996, the Champaign County Public Health Department was approved by referendum, and Champaign County started contracting services from CUPHD. Our sanitarians then began conducting food, septic and well inspections in rural Champaign County (outside C-U).

The Environmental Health Division is made up of a team of thirteen members. These include the director, two program coordinators, an emergency preparedness planner, seven environmental health specialists and two administrative assistants. We have a variety of people at different stages of their careers, each bringing different ideas and knowledge to the department.

Our areas of expertise include food safety and protection, private sewage systems, private water wells, lead poisoning prevention, radon, mosquito/vector control, and tanning facility inspections.
