What Is the Public Health Database?

The Public Health Database is a comprehensive collection of demographic information, health statistics, health behaviors and health care utilization indicators of the Champaign County and Champaign-Urbana areas as well as the State of Illinois. The Public Health Database is a result of a cooperative partnership between the Champaign County Public Health Department, Champaign-Urbana Public Health District and the Department of Community Health at the University of Illinois.

Who May Find the Public Health Database Helpful?

Many types of users may find the Database helpful. Users may be community organizations/agencies, health care organizations, human and service agencies, environmental groups, students and interested citizens.

What Is the Purpose of the Public Health Database?

There are many uses of the Public Health Database depending upon the needs of the user. The Database can help to identify the health status of our area, identify needs to be met, and determine agency or organization priorities. It can also assist in developing programs.

Another major purpose of the Database is to assist in grant writing activities. The Database may help to improve the ability of area agencies and organizations to compete for grant funding for local programs. Database can also be used to assist in evaluating programs and identifying trends, projections and in budget development. Finally, some users may find the Database helpful in their efforts aimed at public education and public support.

Demographics (basic characteristics about the size and composition of the
population)
Vital Statistics (data on births, deaths and the illness/disability)
Maternal and Child Health (data focusing on health of mothers and children)
Chronic Disease (focuses on major chronic diseases such as heart disease and cancer)
Infectious Disease (focuses on major communicable disease including AIDS)
Injury (data on unintentional injuries)
Environmental and Occupational Health (focuses on the environment in which we live and work)
Mental Health (data on mental/emotional/behavioral health)
Health Behaviors (data on lifestyle factors such as exercise, nutrition, smoking and drug abuse)
Health Service Utilization (use and access to health services)

How is the Public Health Database Organized?

The Database was designed after reviewing many websites. The user can identify the areas/topics of interest and from there can identify specific items of interest. For each item a table of data is provided to the extent possible for each of the 5 areas (Champaign County, Champaign-Urbana, Champaign County minus Champaign-Urbana, State of Illinois, and State of Illinois minus Cook County for each of the 3 time periods (1990, 1995 and most recent) to the extent available. The source(s) for each table are provided so the user can go back to the original database if desired. A comprehensive listing of source(s) also is provided under the heading Resources.
