Champaign-Urbana Public Health District Encourages Residents of Champaign County with Private Wells to Test Water Annually

Champaign, IL - In recognition of Ground Water Awareness Week, March 8 - 14, 2009, the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District (CUPHD) encourages residents of Champaign County with private wells to test their water annually for certain contaminants. Private water wells should be tested every year for evidence of coliform bacteria and nitrates, and should be tested more frequently if there are recurrent incidents of gastrointestinal illness or there are changes in taste, odor or appearance. Private well water test kits are available at the Environmental Health Division of CUPHD located at 201 West Kenyon Road in Champaign from 8:00am - 4:00pm; Monday through Friday. Champaign-Urbana Public Health District to Provide FREE Training Workshop for Local Educators

Champaign, IL - On Friday, March 6, 2009 the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District (CUPHD) will be providing local educators with a FREE training workshop on how to effectively address sexual education in their classrooms. The workshop will be held from 9:00am - 3:00pm in the large conference room in CUPHD at 201 West Kenyon Road, Champaign. Unusual Event Under Investigation By Local Authorities

Champaign, IL - For the third time in just over a month, a healthy human placenta has been found by workers at the Urbana-Champaign Sanitary District. Urbana Police contacted the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District (CUPHD), and the Champaign County Coroner's Office for assistance with this unusual situation. Feb 17, 2009 Lincoln's Challenge Academy Illness - Update
Champaign, IL - Champaign-Urbana Public Health District (CUPHD)'s County Health Department Sanitarians are currently collaborating with Lincoln's Challenge Academy (LCA), Illinois National Guard, and officials and representatives of the food service contractor in a detailed disinfecting of the LCA kitchen. Although the incident is still under investigation, CUPHD officials believe that the likely pathogen responsible for the illness is a virus - not food poisoning.

Lab results of food and patient specimens are expected later this week. These lab results are expected to identify the pathogen to allow for better treatment and eradication.

CUPHD expects the disinfecting of the LCA kitchen to be completed by tomorrow, and plan to do a final inspection tomorrow to re-open the kitchen. It is unknown whether the kitchen will be open in time to feed the cadets lunch, but should be operational for... more...

Champaign, IL - The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District (CUPHD) has partnered with the J.W. Eater Junior High to educate teenage girls on the importance of Osteoporosis prevention. This 3-session educational program offered during PE class consists of a series of fun-filled activities that encourage the teens to take small steps to make a big difference in the health of their bones. SmileHealthy, Champaign-Urbana Public Health District, and Illini District Dental Society to provide a FREE Oral Health Fair at Marketplace Mall.

Champaign, IL - On Saturday, February 7, 2009, SmileHealthy, Champaign-Urbana Public Health District (CUPHD), and Illini District Dental Society will be providing FREE School Dental Exams by local volunteer dentists for Illinois school children at the Marketplace Mall in Champaign. These exams will be available from 10:00am - 4:00pm in the Marketplace Mall by Macy's.

The simple 5 minute exam will be available for all children ages 3-17. This exam can be used to satisfy the State of Illinois mandated exam, due by May 15, 2009, required for all children in grades Kindergarten, 2nd and 6th. Champaign, IL - January is National Radon Action Month, and the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District (CUPHD) encourages citizens to learn more about the radon threat and test their homes for the presence of radon. CUPHD has a limited number of FREE radon test kits available for residents of Champaign County.
