Champaign-Urbana Public Health District Encourages Citizens to Test Their Homes with Free Radon Test Kit

CHAMPAIGN, IL - January is National Radon Action Month and the Champaign-Urbana Public Health District (CUPHD) encourages citizens to learn more about the threat of radon and to test their homes for the presence of radon. CUPHD has a limited number of FREE radon test kits available for residents of Champaign County. Test kits may be picked up at the Environmental Health Division of CUPHD located at 201 West Kenyon Road in Champaign; kits are available Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to Noon and 1:00 to 4:00 PM. Test kits are available while supplies last.

Champaign-Urbana Public Health District to Host Car Seat Checkup this Saturday

Champaign IL-Parents are making five critical, but fixable, mistakes when using car seats, according to new data announced by Safe Kids Worldwide and the General Motors Foundation. With so many safety features now available in both cars and car seats, parents are urged to make sure their kids are getting every advantage by taking the time to do a 15-minute at-home annual checkup.

Seventy-three percent of car seats are not being used correctly. To find out why, Safe Kids analyzed data from more than 100,000 car seat inspections done by certified technicians conducted through its Buckle Up Program, a national initiative established in 1997 by Safe Kids and supported by General Motors and the General Motors Foundation to keep children and families safe in and around cars. Community Transformation Initiative Focuses on Obesity and Tobacco Prevention, Healthier Children and Workforce to Address a Public Health Emergency



Champaign, IL - The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District (CUPHD) has been awarded a portion of the We Choose Health Community Transformation Grant. The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is awarding $3.5 million to communities in 60 counties in Illinois and CUPHD will receive $211,922 for the first year. We Choose Health is a multi-year IDPH initiative to encourage and support obesity and tobacco prevention in Illinois communities. CHICAGO - The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) is alerting the public to an outbreak of Salmonella Typhimurium linked to cantaloupes grown on one farm in southwestern Indiana. The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is collaborating in an ongoing multistate investigation to identify all possible sources of contamination and prevent additional cases of illness.

A total of 141 people in 20 states have been infected with Salmonella, associated with this outbreak, with illness onset dates ranging from July 7, 2012 to August 4, 2012. Among the 17 reported Illinois cases-representing 11 counties-eight people have been hospitalized.

CDC and the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) are continuing to investigate, and as a result of the initial investigations, cantaloupe grown in southwestern Indiana is a likely source of this... more...

Pigs are commonly infected with swine influenza (swine flu) viruses that are usually different from human influenza viruses. While rare, influenza can spread from pigs to people and from people to pigs. When people get swine flu, it's usually after contact with pigs. This has happened in different settings, including fairs. Right now, Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) is concerned about a new influenza virus that has been found in U.S. pigs and has infected people too. This virus - called H3N2v when it infects people - may spread more easily to humans than is usual for swine flu viruses.

Champaign, IL - The Champaign-Urbana Public Health District (CUPHD) will be hosting the 1st Annual Working Moms Breastfeeding Expo in conjunction with The Big Latch On August 2-4, 2012 at CUPHD, 201 W. Kenyon Road in Champaign. This event is to increase awareness for community mothers on the breastfeeding support services available to them throughout the community. SPRINGFIELD - The Illinois Department of Public Health (IDPH) has confirmed the first human West Nile virus case reported in Illinois for 2012. The Cook County Health Department reported a female in her 60s became ill earlier this month.

"We are seeing are large increase in West Nile virus activity and this first human case is a good reminder that we all need to take precautions," said Illinois Department of Public Health Director Dr. LaMar Hasbrouck. "The mosquitoes that typically carry West Nile virus, commonly called the house mosquito, are not as noticeable as the swarms of floodwater mosquitoes we see during rainy summers.
