Illinois Reports First Confirmed Case of E.Coli From Spinach

Health Officials Warn Consumers Not to Eat Fresh Spinach, and to Report Any Sales of Fresh Spinach to the Local Health Department

On September 19, the Illinois Department of Public Health confirmed that a north-central Illinois resident was infected with the E. coli 0157:H7 bacterium. This infection is part of a national outbreak attributed to eating fresh spinach. So far, 114 cases of illness related to this outbreak have been reported in several states. Eight people have developed kidney failure and one has died as a result of the outbreak.
