C-UPHD Awarded Bronze-Level Healthy Worksite Status

Champaign-Urbana Public Health District (C-UPHD) Awarded Bronze-Level Healthy Worksite Status

C-UPHD is proud to announce that we were granted Bronze-Level Healthy Worksite Status by the State of Illinois in June 2014.

The Illinois Healthy Worksite Designation was created in 2014 to recognize workplaces with healthy practices that benefit both employers and employees. The designation is sponsored by the Governor's Council on Health & Fitness, the Illinois Department of Public Health, and the Illinois Chamber of Commerce.

Bronze Worksites must provide evidence that they actively promote and support healthy nutrition, and that they provide and encourage opportunities for physical activity at work. C-UPHD's programs that helped us receive a Healthy Worksite designation included:

Our healthy vending cove, which replaced our old vending machine snacks with healthier alternatives, including fresh fruit.
Our Fitness Fridays, where we have group fitness classes in a conference room over the lunch hour.
Our on-site farmer's market during summer months.
Our tobacco-free campus.
Our nutrition and physical activity signage, announcements, and posters.
Our participation in bike-to-work day and our bike racks.
Our worksite health challenges.
Our rethink your drink participation (challenge to eliminate sugar-sweetened beverages from your diet).
Our employee wellness committee, newsletter, and calendar.
Our breastfeeding-friendly facility.

Silver-Level Worksites must meet additional standards, including:

Developing a 12-month health and wellness calendar and an ongoing communication plan to promote employee health and well-being throughout the year.
Demonstrating a commitment to employee health and well-being by making it part of the organization's mission statement, goals and operations.

And Gold-Level Worksites must develop lifestyle and disease management strategies and measure their success annually.

C-UPHD was one of six Champaign County employers to be awarded Healthy Worksite designations. The other Champaign County employers awarded designations in June were: Carle Hospital, Champaign-Urbana Mass Transit District, City of Urbana, Human Kinetics, and Parkland College.

C-UPHD can help other employers apply for the Healthy Worksite status. Employers can contact Tara McCauley at tmccauley@c-uphd.org for more information. Award recipients will receive state-wide recognition and a Certificate of Achievement from the Governor's Office. Employers can also apply to upgrade their status as they implement new wellness programs at work.

C-UPHD's worksite wellness program is part of the Illinois Department of Public Health's We Choose Health Initiative, which is made possible by funding from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.
