Every child is required to get 5 doses of DTaP - which contains the pertussis vaccine.
DTaP is given to children younger than 7 years of age.
Tdap is given to older children and adults.
Vaccination should occur at 2, 4 and 6 months, 15 to 18 months and one dose at 4 to 6 years of age (this vaccine is given in the same shot with diphtheria and tetanus vaccines).
A single dose of Tdap is recommended for people 11 through 64 for continued protection against pertussis.
New rules require students to have a Tdap vaccination, or booster shot, prior to entering 6th or 9th grade.
